A Japanese-American physicist, Dorian Nakamoto was identified by Newsweek in 2014 as Bitcoin’s creator. However, Dorian vehemently denied the claim, stating he had never heard of Bitcoin before the article was published.
Hal Finney
Hal Finney, a renowned cryptographer and one of the first people to work on Bitcoin, is often mentioned as a potential Satoshi. Finney was the recipient of the first Bitcoin transaction and lived near Dorian Nakamoto. While some theorize he used Dorian’s name as a pseudonym, Finney denied being Satoshi before his death in 2014.

The most recent investigation on the creator of Bitcoin came from the HBO documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery”, directed by Cullen Hoback. Peter Todd is a Canadian software developer and cryptography consultant who became involved with Bitcoin in 2010. Not surprisingly, Todd denied to be Satoshi Nakamoto. According to BBC, he reportedly dismissed the claim as “ludicrous” and simply told BBC, “I am not Satoshi Nakamoto.”. Hoback probably thought he will gain fame and glory by revealing who Satoshi Nakamoto is but unfortunately for him, the cryptocurrency community has largely met the documentary’s claims with skepticism. Critics argue that the evidence presented is circumstantial and insufficient to conclusively identify Todd as Nakamoto. Some community members even believe that unmasking Nakamoto’s identity could undermine Bitcoin’s decentralized ethos.

A Team of Individuals
Some people believe that Satoshi Nakamoto is not an individual but a group. This is actually a very logical theory because the Bitcoin system is very complex. Nakamoto’s expertise will need to span across various fields such as cryptography, economics, and programming. As a result, companies like NSA or other governmental organizations have been speculated as possible creators.
After all, the theories and speculations surrounding UFOs and aliens have been ongoing for decades, but the public still have nothing concrete about its origin. The most sound conclusion we can come to after all these years is it must have been a great government cover up. As we are all aware, governments are very skilled in keeping secrets away from the public.

In 2017, a blog post by Sahil Gupta, a former intern at SpaceX speculated that Elon Musk is probably Satoshi. Vili Lehdonvirta
A Finnish programmer, Lehdonvirta was once suspected to be Nakamoto due to his early research on digital currencies and online marketplaces. He is the Professor of Economics, Sociology, and Digital Social Research at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford. As expected, he dismissed being the creator of Bitcoin, stating he had no involvement in Bitcoin.
Wei Dai
Wei Dai is a computer engineer and cypherpunk best known as the creator of B-Money (another precursor to Bitcoin). He has also denied being Nakamoto, though his work inspired much of Bitcoin’s design.
Gavin Andresen
Actually not the least, Gavin Andresen is perhaps one of the most likely individuals to be Satoshi Nakamoto. He is believed to be the person whom Nakamoto entrusted as Bitcoin’s lead developer before disappearing off the scene. However, Andresen has consistently denied being Satoshi.
